Self-Reliance

The Lord has said, “It is my purpose to provide for my saints . . . but it must needs be done in mine own way” (D&C 104:15, 16). This is a promise that Heavenly Father will help take care of His children as they follow Him. Self-reliance does not mean that we can accomplish or obtain anything we want. If we are self-reliant we believe that through the power of Christ, and through our own effort, we can work for the spiritual and practical needs of life.

For 10 to 12 weeks, you will meet in small groups to learn how to become more self-reliant. The coursework combines spiritual principles with practical skills.

Spiritual Benefits

A wonderful opportunity to take a spirit-filled journey to discover practical skills for building your emotional resiliency in a very chaotic world. Numerous opportunities to share personal experiences with fellow participants allows you to strengthen and support each other — a true partnership as you counsel together. You quickly learn that no trial you experience is wasted. It can minister to and transform you when learning how to identify the life-changing insights and growth opportunities it offers. You come to understand how thoughts truly influence your emotions and how you can choose more appropriate responses. Foundational changes are made that will improve the quality of your life. It was so worth the time, effort and vulnerability required.

— Sally Ann Mauss, Glenrose Ward

I followed a prompting to enroll in the Emotional Resilience course, and each week I left the class feeling grateful. I gained new knowledge, tools, resources, and classmates/instructors who became friends. This class helped me to feel more confident and in control of my emotions, even though I can’t control everything that happens in life. I feel more self-reliant, but also more reliant and faith-filled in Christ. The coursework is the kind that you will want to review again and again even after the course is over. It is my feeling that anyone in any walk of life would benefit from taking this course.

— Sierra Frostad, Manito Ward

I have gained a greater understanding from this class about the power of the Savior Jesus Christ in my life and how my building a stronger relationship with Him straightens me.

  • This class provides a safe and comfortable place to share personal thoughts and feelings.
  • Here we learned about empathy and understanding others and their feelings and concerns.
  • It’s an opportunity to learn better and more positive ways to handle trials.
  • Many tools are offered to help us act and not react or be acted upon.
  • Positive and healthy ideas are taught to help us in responding to the stress and anxiety of our everyday interactions.
  • A side blessing is the chance to meet others who have struggles, concerns, depression, or anxiety in parts of their life just like the rest of us.

If time and space allows I would join the class again. So many positive things to learn and share with each other especially in these confusing times.

— Cathy York, Glenrose Ward
